Lynx and Fox, Part 1
Lynx and Fox, Part 2
Sutyu using flight magic
Sutyu and Artemis
Future London. Who gets to decide what is justice? There’s a killer on the loose with the Midas touch, hellbent on turning every cop into gold. Fox Wu can see the future—and he knows his brother, Detective Lynx, is the next victim. Only problem? Lynx doesn’t believe him. Fox’s visions are fickle at best, and besides, what’s Lynx supposed to do? Putting himself in danger sleuthing Midas is just part of the job.
Chasing the clues, Lynx finds out Midas wants revenge, and there’s a key witness who’s the answer to it all. But Fox has another vision, where the witness is covered in blood. Fox would do anything to prove his worth and protect the witness—absolutely out of the question, according to Lynx.
Tensions between the brothers are boiling over. Lynx might be the last good cop in London but Fox is willing to bet he could do Lynx’s job. It’s detective vs amateur sleuth. While the brothers are divided, the killer is closing in, and Fox is right about one thing: Lynx is the next golden target.
Future London: Detective Lynx Wu may have rare restoration magic, but even he can’t restore what was lost—his brother, snatched during a freak attack. Caught fleeing the scene is Lynx’s arch-nemesis, the Magic Thief. Who is she? How is she involved? Lynx only has one clue: her signature masquerade mask.
Magic Thief Sutyu Lam could have told him who did it. She’s friends with Lynx’s brother and wants him back as much as Lynx does. Instead, Sutyu takes matters into her own hands by accepting a risky deal from the kidnapper: steal Lynx’s rare magic in exchange for his brother’s safety. Stealing is her bread and butter, and seducing the handsome Lynx isn’t a bad gig.
But the masks are slipping. As Lynx gets closer to revealing the Magic Thief’s identity, his affection for Sutyu grows. She could be the key to getting his brother back, but trusting her is akin to trusting a viper not to bite.
Lynx must choose and fast: ally himself with the Magic Thief and get his brother back together, or go it alone like he always does—and risk losing everything.
When Detective Lynx Wu receives a Christmas cutout ransom note for his kidnapped brother Fox, he’s taken down a path that leads him to ever stranger clues—including toast, Christmas crackers, and dinner with his mum, apparently arranged by the perpetrator. Someone from his past has come knocking, but what are they truly after?
This is a short story epilogue that follows from the end of Book 1, When the Mask Slips. No prior knowledge of the book is required to understand this story.
Please note: this is a short story with a length of roughly 40 pages.
Detective Lynx Wu might be the only good cop still alive in a London full of magic and tech, but maintaining peace, justice, and his own integrity is harder than ever before. He will need every bit of wit and resolve if he is to succeed—and not be corrupted.

Please note: this does not come with a box.
Sutyu is a badass woman with a questionable past, but she is undeniably likeable anyway.
I love a strong, smart, and very cunning female character, and Sutyu ticks all those boxes and more.
When the Mask Slips is a refreshing departure from traditional urban fantasy, blending cyberpunk aesthetics with a touch of magic. Set in a futuristic world filled with intrigue and morally complex characters, this novel is a must-read for fans of dystopian fantasy and crime thrillers.
Such a unique futuristic urban fantasy setting, sympathetic & likable characters, relationship dynamics to die for, a fast-paced yet character-centric plot... This one has everything that I adore.
Sutyu, the mysterious and stylish magic thief who steals more than just abilities- she steals the show! Their relationship is the chef's kiss- filled with tension, wit, and just the right amount of romance.
I would never have thought a book could be a detective story with a heart, a fantasy tale with grit, and a science fiction adventure all rolled into one. The worldbuilding is absolutely incredible.
The setting of a futuristic London was brilliant and I kinda wish I could go and visit for a long weekend. Even though it's so much different from our current capital city, it felt like it could be real, a glimpse into a future yet to come.
Iris is a mum of 2 living in Prague, Czech Republic. She has always loved crime fiction and thrillers, and find magic irresistible, so it seems natural to combine the two into her Detective Lynx Wu series featuring a British Chinese detective. She is a foodie, and before she wanted to be a writer, she once wanted to be an artist. She now makes her own art for her books (mostly because she has no money) and dabbles in origami.
